Take your sport seriously (film)

We have recently produced a series of 6 films about just how seriously triathletes take their sports. Triathlon widows/widowers will probably find them familiar…
Here is the first one:

Race Around Ireland – shorter route option for 2013

Carvalho Custom has been sponsoring the Race Around Ireland for the last 2 years and they have just announced their start date for 2013, which is 15th of September. Their standard route is 2100 kms non-stop racing round Ireland, for solo riders or teams of 2, 4 or 8. For the solo riders that is clearly a super-human challenge and there are not many people on the planet able to do it, so for 2013 they are going to have a half-distance option so that more riders can give it a go.

If you are interested in epic bike challenges, they you should certainly consider giving the Race Around Ireland a go – it is fantastically well organised, with a unique race atmosphere and you get to see one of the world’s most beautiful countries on the way round. Here is a flavour of the race from 2012.

We supplied custom cycling jerseys for all the competitors – when you have been sitting on bike for 5 days with virtually no sleep and 2000 kms in your legs, getting a free jersey must seem like scant reward, but nobody is into endurance bike racing for the prizes. But what the hell are they in it for? Strange, strange people….

Swedish Cycling & Triathlon Show

We have just come back from the Swedish cycling show (Svenska Sportmässan) in Jönköping; we were lucky enough to have one of Sweden’s top triathletes, Joel Vikner helping out at our stand. It was a real privilege to spend a couple of days with Joel, because as well as being an all-round super nice guy, he also had a good line in training stories that could make your ears bleed, when you realise just what it takes to get to the top of the sport. He told me that he had done a ‘hard’ early morning at the pool a while back, which was 10 sets of 1500m, each set starting at 20 minute intervals. And then going to University for a day of lectures. Ouch!

Anyway, Sweden was a great country to spend some time in: scarily efficient and well-run and just generally deeply civilised. It is great news for out company that we are starting to get stream of business from Swedish cycling and triathlon clubs and a lot of the people we spoke to at the show were very receptive to the idea of buying from us direct from Portugal. We continue to sponsor Sweden’s top male triathlete, Per Wangel, which shows our commitment to growing our brand in Sweden and we hope to be out in Sweden again in 2013 to have a presence at one of the major triathlon events.

Joel was also good enough to share some of his thoughts on triathlon at a talk at the show, pictured above. I couldn’t understand a word he was saying, but he was no doubt terrifying his audience with stories from his training regime. Thanks so much to him for helping us out and we really look forward to going back to Sweden as soon as possible!

Race Around Ireland trip

We had a great weekend in Trim, Ireland for the start of the Race Around Ireland, which Carvalho Custom has been very proud to sponsor. Picture below are the 13 solo racers in their Carvalho Custom jerseys, most of them looking pretty grim-faced (they are about to ride 2200kms non-stop, so who can blame them).

The first day of racing, it was wet. Very wet:

Nicole managed to shelter from the worst of the weather and keep smiling.

And here is the second day of racing. Most of the riders have had less than an hour of sleep by this time….

Hieronder staan 13 solorenners gekleed in hun Carvalho Custom jerseys.

Trois Etapes film

The Trois Etapes was the first pro-am cycling event, raising over £1 million for charity, with pro riders such as Carlos Sastre leading teams of 6 riders in a team time-trial race in the Alps. Carvalho Custom was the kit supplier for the team jerseys, shorts, rain jackets and winners’ jerseys.

As a company Carvalho Custom is very proud to supply custom cycling kit to prestigious events such as this one, the Race Around Ireland, the Dutch Winter Triathlon Series and so on, but we also sponsor a host of smaller events, typically organised by clubs who are already clients of ours. So if your club is organising an event and you need a kit sponsor, please get in touch with us and tell us about your event.

Trois Etapes race on Eurosport

The Trois Etapes race was run at the beginning of August – 3 mountain stages in the French Alpes to raise a million pounds for charity, with 60 riders taking part. We were chosen as the kit supplier, supplying shorts, cycling jerseys and jackets for the 3 days of riding and winners’ jerseys. Nicole and Charlie from Carvalho Custom went out to see the event and it was fantastic fun and unbelievably well organised.

The event is organised by Cosaveli and they have already made a commitment to run it again in 2013. The race was run in teams of 6 headed by a pro or ex-pro rider (one of which was Carlos Sastre) and the race director was Scott Sunderland, so it was a pretty impressive set up. You can watch the race on Eurosport this Sunday (18th of August) at 16.45 on Eurosport at the end of the coverage of the Vuelta.

Here is Nicole with the winners of the team race, the Right to Play team, who raised an incredible $400k for their charity through the Trois Etape race. You can check out some more photos here and here all in Carvalho Custom kit!

Triathlon fashion designer wanted

Having recently started selling our blue and pink triathlon and cycling kit online, we have had a lot of requests to make some more designs available, particularly for female triathletes. The trouble with most triathlon kit available in the shops is that it is frankly a bit boring, mainly black with a few flashes of colour if you are lucky. Because our kit is fully printed, there are pretty much no design limitations, so we thought we would start selling a few more designs.

To get some really funky designs made we thought we would have a look for some contributions from outside of our company, so if you think you could design particularly female triathlon clothing, but also clothing for both sexes for cycling as well as triathlon, please get in touch (email Charlie via our contacts page).

If you would like to give it a go, there is really no point in coming up with conservative designs, because other people are doing that – we would like to come up with something really different. If you would like to have a go doing some sketches, there are some templates available on our cycling and triathlon design page. You do not need to have any experience in graphic design to get this work, you just need to be original….

New custom cycling bib shorts

We have developed some new cycling bib-shorts to give an even more comfortable fit. The cut of the panels have been altered to ensure that the lycra is less stretched round the waist when you are in the cycling position, whilst maintaining compression on the legs to help soothe those aching quads. We have also added the option to have lycra-band leg grippers rather than silicone so that the grip itself is less constricting on the muscle.

The shorts incorporate a side panel that swishes round the front of the leg and a separate back panel to link the two side panels, rather than having a continuous ‘U’ panel running down the legs and over the backside. It is an unbelievable amount of work to design, test and then redesign a garment as complex as cycling shorts, but we think that we have now developed the most comfortable ergonomically designed cycling shorts available on the market!

custom cycling bib shorts back

We have maintained our carbon mesh chamois, because we think it is the most comfortable chamois available on the market, as it uses fabric mesh rather than foam, which will not absorb moisture (to avoid the ‘nappy’ feel in the wet) and uses carbon threads to help dissipate the heat, as well as being completely antibacterial and anatomically cut.
