Riding the Col de la Colombière

I had the opportunity to do a day of cycling out of Geneva the other day, and we chose the Col de la Colombière. It is a typical alpine climb, 16.3 kms at an average of 6.8%, with a kick in the teeth at the end with 3 kms at over 10%.

It was pretty embarassing to get my backside whipped by my brother, but was made up for by the sight of another guy who was riding with us when he hit the top. Jake was not in the best of shape, but through brute will power he charged to the top and suffered like a dog, in the best tradition of amateur cycling. Pictured here at the top!

If you’ve got a summit photo of someone looking worse off than this, please send it in and we will publish it here (especially if you are wearing Fernando Carvalho kit!).

Tom Aikens Rides the Marmotte

It is pretty impressive for anyone to ride the Marmotte, so well done to Tom Aikens for completing the course. You can read about it here http://www.menshealth.co.uk/Fitness-&-muscle/active-cycle-challenge/v3.

He was riding with Wyndymilla, which is a new cycling team/cycling coaching outfit, run by ex elite rider Henry Furniss and his gorgeous wife Nasima. They help everyone from complete novices to established cyclists get the most out of riding a bike, with none of the hassle. See their site at www.wyndymilla.com.

Given that they demand only the very best quality cycling clothing and equipment for their members, we are very pleased to supply them, having supplied Henry’s Bike and Run team when he was an elite rider.

Cycling holidays in Portugal

We are really happy to be working with AtoZ Adventures who work with us to run cycling holidays in Portugal. They have an outstanding range of moutain bike, road and hybrid holidays on offer and they are fantastic guys as well! They can do guided tours and self-guided tours with GPS or old-fashioned maps, so they have something for everyone.

We used to do a lot more work on running cycling holidays, but our cycling and triathlon custom clothing business has grown so much that we can no longer spend the time required on cycling holidays so we had to hand this side of the business over to a partner company.

MAD mtb Dublin

We were very happy to get an email from one of Ireland’s largest mountain bike clubs, the Mountain Bike Association of Dublin(www.madmtb.com) who we recently supplied. The team dog seemed particularly happy with the kit and here is the email they sent us:

Hi Nicole,

Please find attached some pictures of members (and mascot) wearing our new gear for your gallery.

Everyone is very impressed with it, some of the guys did a 200km tour last weekend and commented that the shorts were the best they’ve ever had. It’s been drawing compliments from members and other clubs alike and there’s been good demand for another order.

I’ve just finished taking requests for another order and I’ve had some ladies wondering if they could have 3/4 lengths without a bib?

Also, we’ve decided to get lycra shoe covers and cycling caps this time, so we’ll need a design for these. Is there any extra charge for this? (taking that all logos, colours etc are the same as before)

Many thanks,
Sean
www.madmtb.com

The answer to the questions are that we can do the 3/4s with no bibs and there is no charge for designing extra items for the range as the one off design fee that they originally paid covers all the cycling kit designs.

How we run a low cost business

We miss out on a lot of sales because potential clients think that we can’t possibly supply pro quality kit at such reasonable prices, so how do we do it?

Our business was set up in 2001 and from the start we were determined to keep our costs down to an absolute minimum. Now that we sell half a million euros of kit a year, the rules are still the same. That means:

* no advertising (word-of-mouth is free!)
* no brochures (the internet is almost free!)
* no free sponsored clothing for high profile teams
* no buying stock on credit and no offering of credit to clients
* no company cars (or company bikes!)
* distributing directly from our factory in Portugal (rather than through agents taking a 30% cut)
* cycling to meetings where possible and videoconferencing even better to avoid travel costs
* setting up long terms deals with suppliers where we guarantee them business if they can guarantee rock bottom prices

Then we have an obsession with 2 things to keep clients coming back:

* First the quality of the kit, so that we can be confident that our kit will sit quite happily next to anything pro athletes use (no cost cutting when it comes to quality!)
* Second a devotion to customer service so that we can be confident no competitor will look after clients better than us (we aim to anwswer emails within two hours of receiving them, but never let them go unanswered more than 24 hours for example).

So that is the secret! We run a business in one of Europe’s lowest cost economies and obsess with keeping our costs down. Then we obsess with delivering pro quality and unbeatable customer service. No secrets there….

Cotswold league jerseys

We are proud to sponsor the leaders and winners jerseys for the Cotswold league. They organise a league over the racing season open to all-comers that uses a handicap system. In the recent Albourne race it was gutting to see that the LVIS boys could only manage third and fourth – what’s going on there? They were wearing Fernando Carvalho kit, the fastest kit on the circuit and they still didn’t make it to the top of the podium.

You can find out more about the Cotswold League at http://www.thecotswoldleague.co.uk or their facebook page http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=7315182239

What the hell is microfibre anyway?

We tend to bang on a bit about the fact that we use microfibre for our kit (for cycling jerseys, custom technical t-shirts, cycling caps etc), but what is it and why is it so great?

Microfibre is essentially a thread that is less than a 100 times thinner than a human hair, which gives it some special properties – it is very soft on the skin and can give you very vivid colours when using sublimation printing, but the main benefit is its wicking proprties. Wicking just means that moisture (sweat) gets absorbed from your skin and transferred to the outside of the fabric so that it can be evaporated away, so that you stay dry.

For our cycling jerseys we use an extra special microfibre that has lots of tiny holes in to further aid evaporation and also has a cell structure that bacteria find difficult to bed down in; this means that they cannot get to work on your sweat so easily, so the jersey doesn’t smell bad. The fabric is also very stretchy to give a contoured fit and ultra-lightweight so that you hardly notice you are wearing it. Pretty clever stuff!

There are a lot of different microfibres available to make technical clothing from and we spend a lot of time making up samples with different fabrics and trying them out on the bike, in the gym, in the pool or wherever. It helps only employing people who are all sports fanatics! So if we are ever not in the office answering your emails, then you now know that we are out ’testing’ kit. It’s a tough job, but someone’s got to do it!

Boards Cycling Kit, Ireland

We have just made the cycling kit for a popular Irish Cycling forum, boards (http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=410). They have confirmed our belief that the Irish are the best natured people on the planet and it has been a pleasure to work with them to produce their kit.

Here is what they had to say to us:

Hi Nicole,
Just wanted to drop you a line to let you know how happy we are with the kit! I finally managed to pry it from the hands of the Irish Postal service on Friday, and managed to get the stuff out to most of the guys that needed it in time for the Wicklow 200 on Sunday.

Everyone was universally delighted with the way it all turned out, the fit and design worked out just perfectly, and there were quite a few compliments from other riders on the day.

We’re so happy with the stuff, that there should be another order going in in a couple of weeks, and we will definately be getting training jackets for the winter (although we’re trying to enjoy the good weather we have right now while we have it!)

Also, I see from your blog that you’re now offering cycling caps, and am wondering if we would have to pay another design fee to get a boards cap aswell (as it wasn’t an option when we got the initial designs done)

Thanks again for everything, and I look forward to ordering from you again!

Al

In fact the one off design fee that they paid when they placed the order covers the complete custom cycling range, so there will be no extra design charge to make custom cycling caps or any other custom cycling kit for that matter, even though we did not originally do a design for this.

North Somerset Cycling Development Squad

We were very happy to supply some jerseys to the NSCDS and they kindly sent us a photo which I have to say makes the jerseys look fantastic.

Here is the email they sent:

Charlie
I thought I’d send you a photo of one of our lot for your gallery.
Everyone loves the kit and we will be sending in another order very shortly!
Do the new caps come in different sizes?
Cheers
Hayden

The answer to the question about the custom cycling caps is that they are currently one size fits all.

The Chain Gang, Tralee

We have worked really hard to establish our brand in Ireland – we don’t really believe in advertising, just the value of word of mouth that comes from delivering pro quality at fair prices. The Tralee Chain Gang had this to say about us:

Hi Charlie,

This is a pic of some of our ‘gang’ that attended the Currow CC tour cycle on the 1st June. We’re nearly thirty strong at this point so we still need to organise a proper shot of all of us to send it onto you -tralee chain gang we might need a camera with a wide angle lens to get us all into view though!

Everyone loves the kit, so much to the point that we even picked up three new previously unattached cyclists on the day, who were immediately interested going for a full set! And then you tell them the prices and people can hardly believe what you’ve quoted them for custom kit.

It’s getting a great wearing now that the weather’s improved a bit, getting 100 miles and more worth of wear a week and it’s all holding up excellently.

Our final word on our kit is; we absolutely recommend Fernando Carvalho to any club large, small or just starting out and interested in investing in their own kit. The help recieved through each step of the designing, sizing and ordering process is second to none and you finish up with your very own pro-quality kit exactly as you want it. For people like us, it helped bring a group of people who have been training together for years into a club with a real presence on the roads. And in only a matter of months from first contacting you. We can’t thank you enough.

Finally, keep an eye out for the Chain Gang on the roads of Munster and at the up coming Ring of Kerry and Tour of Waterford cycles, the next big ones on the menu – we’re nearly unmissable now!
